My blog is called Ordinary stories. Now, whatever are ordinary stories? Surely the only stories worth telling are extraordinary ones.. But ordinary stories need telling too.. they are stories of ordinary people seeing interesting things, of extraordinary ideas or simply people finding themselves in intriguing situations. Being ordinary is by no means considered a virtue. But ordinary people (like me) are easy to please.. they will find the most mundane things fascinating. So I find there is a certain appeal in being ordinary. This does not in any way indicate what I will write about here.. but one thing I am certain of- I want to share with you all the things that fascinate me, intrigue me, or appeal to me any way.
The thing that always gets me thinking is this human dilemma of whether we want to be noticed or blend in. On one hand we want to fit in with those around us and not stick out a mile. And on the other hand, we struggle to attract other peoples attention. Whether we admit it or not, we make a huge effort for both. It is expected of us, and -knowingly or unknowingly- we expect it of others. And all of this is for social acceptance. We want people to want us around. They want us to want them around. We want each other to want us. That's a lot of effort for so simple a thing! You could have just said.. we all want each other.. Stop the silly games!
But then the last thing we want is to let people think we are ordinary! That just won't do.. we are special- just like everyone else. So we engage in a never ending game of one-up-manship. So I ask, do we want to be ordinary or not? I am sure a social anthropologist or psychologist could explain.
I am sorry if my blog seems a little incoherent. But it is my first one here...
